Victorias City joined the entire nation in
commemorating the 116th Philippine Independence with the theme,
“Kalayaan 2014: Pagsunod sa Yapak ng mga Dakilang Pilipino Tungo sa Malawakan
at Permanenteng Pagbabago” last June 12.
Mayor Francis
Frederick Palanca, Vice Mayor Jerry Jover, members of the Sangguniang
Panlungsod, barangay officials, city department heads, employees, various socio-civic and non-government
organizations, business sectors, academe and special guests were present and
offered wreaths to the Philippine flag and statues of two great national heroes,
Jose Rizal and Andres Bonifacio at the Victorias City Public Plaza.
The short commemorating program started with a
nationalistic prayer led by Councilor Godiven Chiz De Dios-Senido.
Mayor Francis Frederick Palanca, Vice Mayor
Jerry Jover, the City Councilors, Chief of Police P/Supt. Santiago Rapiz, World
War II Veteran CPL Rodrigo Olis led the flag raising ceremony at the veranda of
the City Hall.
The Mayor emphasized that the commemoration of
the 116th anniversary of the declaration of the country’s
independence is a reminder to the people that a lot has yet to be done.
“The
essence of real freedom is not about driving away the enemy, more than anything
else, it is about living in a society where there is social justice and
equality.” he said.
Ma. May Santillan sang one of the most
heartfelt songs in our country’s history, “Ako ay Pilipino”, after the national
flag has been hoisted.
The Philippine Independence day is one of the
most significant events in our history held across the country on June 12 each
year. It is also an event celebrated by many Filipino communities around the
globe. It was 116 years ago, on June 12, 1898 that our nation was liberated
from the Spanish rule.
